As the National Gallery of Denmark, the SMK is home to much of the nation’s art heritage. Its halls contain many different visual modes of expression testifying to the thoughts, observations, ideas, and experiences that human beings within Western culture have had right back from the 1300s to our present day. The collection is very extensive, and only a fraction of it can be presented in the rooms at any given time.
With the highlights presented in this book, we wish to create some points to navigate by when exploring the vast collection. The highlights selected feature important works from Western art history. The artists include a stellar cast from Andrea Mantegna, Lucas Cranach the Elder, and Parmigianino to Nicolai Abildgaard, C.W. Eckersberg, and Vilhelm Hammershøi, and further on to Henri Matisse, Emil Nolde, Georges Braque, Asger Jorn, and Robert Smithson.
The book is divided into the following chapters: European Art 1300-1800, Danish and Nordic Art 1750-1900, Danish and International Art after 1900 and The Royal Collection of Graphic Art.
